What Should I Do After I'm Approved for Naturalization?

visa1-773x510.jpgNaturalization is the process in which a foreigner officially obtains U.S. citizenship and nationality by fulfilling the necessary legal requirements. Once the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, or USCIS, has approved your Application for Naturalization and your Form N-400, they will schedule you for your naturalization ceremony. Your naturalization ceremony contains important steps that you will need to take in order to complete the process of becoming a U.S. citizen and to be officially approved for naturalization.

What Is Included in My Naturalization Ceremony?

Some people are able to start their naturalization ceremony on the same day as their final interview, but if it is unavailable they will mail you a notice with the date and location of your ceremony on a Form N-445.

Once you arrive at your ceremony, you will have to submit a questionnaire to the USCIS that you must fill out before you arrive. You must also return your Permanent Resident Card, or green card, to the USCIS when you check in. Then, you must take the Oath of Allegiance, which is the most important part of your naturalization process. You are not technically a legal U.S. citizen until you have taken the oath.

After the oath, you will receive your Certificate of Naturalization, which you will need to review in order to inform the USCIS of any mistakes before you leave the ceremony. This certificate will be your official proof that you are a U.S. citizen. After your ceremony, you will be able to apply for a U.S. passport, register to vote, and update your Social Security information.
